  8. COMDEX: NEW NEWTON/CD-ROM TITLES FROM STARCORE

  10.     StarCore, the new software publishing and distribution group within Apple's
  11. PIE division, has announced more than a dozen new titles for the Newton
  12. MessagePad and other Newton-based products as well as several new CD-ROM
  13. titles. All are scheduled to be released nationwide before Christmas 1994.
  14.     Apple's StarCore group publishes and distributes software on CD-ROM for the
  15. Mac and on PCMCIA cards and floppy diskettes for the Newton technology
  16. platform.  Apple's StarCore titles are focused around edutainment, sports,
  17. entertainment, reference, business applications and self-improvement.
  18.     Software companies which have already committed to exclusive distribution
  19. through Apple's StarCore affiliate label program for Newton titles include,

  170.   Things that, while not necessarily bugs, can be annoying.

  176.   It seems to be pretty easy to put a nice scratch on the top layer
  177.   of the screen. All it takes is to pick up a little bit of sand or
  178.   grit with the pen. There should be an easy way to replace the top
  179.   layer of the screen (if not user-installable, it should be an easy
  180.   job for a dealer).
  181.  
  182.   The plastic socket on the back of the Newton that allows it to attach
  183.   to the carrying case is pretty flimsy on the early units. Apparently
  184.   Apple is using a better one now. If you ever take your unit in for
  185.   repair, you can ask for it to be replaced. (Information from Eric
  186.   Shapiro).

  226. "Apple's problem is that that's the way the Newton works. It needs
  227. 2-3 weeks to train itself properly (and, to some extent to subtly
  228. train you) so that its perfomance is tailored to the way you write
  229. and operate, and you learn its little quirks... In-store demos,
  230. particularly of recognizing a potential buyer's handwriting, are
  231. doomed to be disappointing or worse (if the machine is set up so
  232. that the last twelve Charlies have thoroughly confued the Newton
  233. as to what writing style it's expected to recognize... Thus, Apple
  234. needs to find a way to sell the Newton almost 'on faith.' That's
  235. not an easy trick, but if anyone can pull it off Apple can. Remember
